Compare the job, then the price

A storefront, a learning community, and an app-based membership solve different problems. Start with the member experience you need. Make a list of required delivery, support, payment, and access tasks.

A lower advertised fee is not enough to choose a platform. Include monthly charges, processing fees, required extras, and the time needed to operate the product. Test a small product before moving an established customer base.

Whop: apps and payment services

Whop offers apps for the member experience and lists no monthly platform charge. The base US card fee is 2.7% plus $0.30. Optional services and other payment conditions can add charges.

It is a candidate when you want to combine tools inside a Whop. Confirm each app's availability, permissions, and current pricing in your own account.

Skool: community and courses

Skool lists Hobby at $9 per month and Pro at $99 per month. Its detailed fee guidance lists 10% plus $0.30 for Hobby. Pro has a lower transaction rate that changes for larger transactions; check the current threshold and rules.

Consider it when the community and learning experience are central to the offer. Test the course layout, member discussion, and recurring payments with your actual delivery plan.

Stan: creator storefront

Stan lists Creator at $29 per month and Creator Pro at $99 per month. It states that it does not take a platform transaction fee; payment processor charges still apply.

Consider it when your main task is selling from a creator storefront. List the features you require before choosing a plan. Check how customers receive the product and how you will support them.

Gumroad: digital products

Gumroad lists direct sales at 10% plus $0.50, with card processing described separately in its detailed fee guide. Discover marketplace sales have a 30% fee that includes processing.

Separate direct customer acquisition from marketplace discovery in your comparison. Different sources of customers can have different costs. Test the purchase, download, refund, and customer-contact process.

Before you switch

Moving a product can create extra work for customers. Test access, recurring subscriptions, refunds, data exports, and support instructions before you plan a transfer. Ask the platform what can be moved and what must be recreated.

  • Can customers access the same material on mobile?
  • Can you export the records you need?
  • What happens to existing subscriptions?
  • What is the total cost for your typical sale?
  • Can you run a small pilot before a full move?
